Creating Uniquely Themed Christmas Trees

The holidays often bring out the creativity in many of us. Holiday open houses around the country give us an opportunity to see how other families decorate their trees and homes and can spark inspiration in the rest of us. Theme trees are fun way to dress up your home in a warm, romantic, creative way. Best of all, if you change up your themes from year to year you'll never grow tired of your tree

Here are some ideas that may inspire you to create your own magical holiday tree.

NATIVE AMERICAN TREE

Native Americans pride themselves on caring for and being in tuned with mother earth. Their respect for our natural world lends itself well to creating a nature themed tree using items from nature and hand-crafted Native American ornaments. Using real trees will fill your home with the fresh scent of pine. Accents may include bird's nests, ornaments made of twigs, small sun catchers, decorative pine cones, birds, and more.

SUGAR PLUM TREE

"The children were tucked all snug in their beds, while visions of sugar plums danced in their heads..."

We have associated sugar plums with Christmas since reading The Night Before Christmas. These special treats make a lovely idea for decorating your holiday tree. Lavender and plum glass balls, white lights, silver or gold accents, floral accents and shimmery gold ribbons make for a magical tree. You can incorporate a taste of Tchaikovsky's Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies, by adding fairy ornaments to your tree as well. This classic will be sure to delight all of your holiday guests.

PURE SILVER

This silver themed tree will have you feeling like royalty. The silver boughs, silver ornaments and white lights will create an up-scale, shimmery ambience that is sure to dress up any room. Silver accents are easy to find at this time of year and are enormously elegant as both primary decor or simple accents. Seek out accents such as silvery snowflakes, doves, florals, and icicles to make your uniquely magical tree. By alternating solid silver balls and those with glittery and frosted overlays, you diversify your tree and leave ample opportunity for the lights to play off of the ornaments.

HOLIDAY BOWS TREE

When most of us see bows, we think of beautifully wrapped gifts just waiting to be ripped open. Bows add an elegant touch to every package and yes, even to trees. in order to help capitalize on the spirit of the biggest gift-giving season, try covering your tree in bows. You can go for an over-the-top or a minimalist design. With bows, there's no such thing as too much or too little. Just be sure to save the biggest, fanciest bow for the tree top. White lights work well as do complementary colored glass balls and beads.

GOLD AND BURGUNDY

These are some of the most classic and sophisticated colors I can think of. They exude warmth and romance. Burgundy and gold ribbons and glass balls illuminated by tiny white lights with spiral accents are sure to make your holiday home the envy of the neighborhood. Try rimming the base of your tree with poinsettias or a rich velvet skirt. Small bows, birds or antique ornaments also add lovely touches.

BUTTERFLY TREE

Butterflies inspire feelings of serenity, gentleness and peace which are synonymous with the Christmas season. Butterflies are not seen during the winter months, but you can bring them into your home for the season by creating a stunning holiday tree using these magnificent winged creatures as your theme. Butterfly ornaments made of satin, crystal and metal will make any tree book brilliant. Depending upon the ornaments you select, you can create either an elegant or a whimsical tree. The choice is yours.
